Herein lies a beautiful collection of fitness stories, as we share our personal experiences, the struggles we face to stay in fine fettle and how we overcome the challenges that limit our growth, both individually and as a team. We hope that our blog can inspire you to join us in this fantastic journey, thus achieving a good balance in your life through healthy living. With God in the center of our lives, guiding us as we seek to motivate and encourage one another, we dream for this to be an effective platform for other women (and men too!) to share on their endless fitness battles too!

How Elyn & Cheryann got together

Bareface Fettle was the birth of a magical idea, composed by two individuals who yearned to make a difference in their lives.

It came about over a simple coffee chat, but in the most incredible way possible. As the acronym suggests, we have been the best of friends for more than a decade. This bond was not strong from the beginning, it took plenty of nurturing and patience to get to where we are today. Late night parties, booze and boys were all we cared about back then. We had to impress everyone with thick layers of makeup on our faces. Concealing our flaws and looking pretty were more important than nutrition, exercise and sleep.

The older we got, the more we valued our health because it dawned upon us that we only had one body to live in. Hence, we shed the powder and shimmery willingly, got into the workout groove, armoured in activewear and gym shoes instead.

This is Elyn with her favourite toy.

My fitness journey began in August 2014 after I chanced upon Kayla Itsines’ Bikini Body Guide (BBG). KayIa had acquired a huge fan base who followed her guide religiously. Honestly, I was so attracted to those ladies and their inspiring stories of achieving the “Dream Bikini Body”. It got me real determined to get that bikini body confidence too.

Initially the progress was painfully slow and unnoticeable, and I only had myself to blame since discipline was my key issue. Not only did I not follow the program faithfully, I was also unable to resist junk food. I was utterly disappointed with myself. Nonetheless, I resumed BBG workout in January 2015 and also gradually corrected my nutrition habits. I began to experiment with the recipes I found online so that I could still enjoy my favourite dishes guilt-free. A whale of a motivation came from the visible results I saw in the mirror.

To improve is to change

Today I have completed BBG 1 & 2 program and I thought to myself, what could be next? My love for fitness has yet reached another level. I want to learn more and challenge myself so that I can improve on the areas I am weak in. Knowing that my body is not naturally flexible, I started taking up yoga classes with Cheryann to attain my goal of a full frontal split. And yes, I am still working on it!

I am never a fan of cardio exercises because of a chronic lower back problem. But now, I make it a point to run 3km to the wet market every other morning, just to boost my endurance and stamina.

To push myself further, I sign up for a local contest, Nutrigirl Fitness Model Search, where 37 female fitness fanatics come together to compete for the best physique. My aim is to witness another transformation in this journey of mine despite my age.

If fitness is a drug, it is the only dope I want to get high on.

BBG has led me to folks who have similar fitness goals. The fact that we have each other to cheer on is a true blessing from God. I learn not to be too anxious in getting the results I desire because well, Rome wasn’t built in a day. As long as I work towards my goal with the right attitude, patience and perseverance will bring me there in due time. Time is the essence for creating great things in life.

BFFs remember, fitness is a never ending journey, not a destination.

Here’s Cheryann staying hydrated.

Never too late to start.

How did I ever get here? I surprised myself too because I had always been the sickly child. It was the toughest period of my life. Sinusitis and asthma attacks were so frequent, I spent most of my teenage years in and out of clinics and hospitals. Going to school was a chore since the compound was built on higher ground. I had never been to MacRitchie Reservoir for cross-country runs. Never needed to partake in Physical Education lessons. Many of my classmates looked at me with envy when they had to do their 2.4km jog. I was so frail, I would get “blown away by the wind”. Confidence was one word I had never associated myself with.

It wasn’t until May 2014 that I started going to the gym. It only took me weeks to see the transformation in my body. Working out with colleagues was fun even though they were mostly boys. I followed them around different stations, carried weights and pulled cables. Eventually I got myself a personal trainer because I was curious about TRX suspension training and Muay Thai. This routine brought about a leaner and healthier me. My menstrual cycle became more regular.

I started to love the perpetual muscle aches. Soreness became the most satisfying pain ever.

Elyn called me up some time late 2015, asking if I wanted to join her for yoga classes. She had engaged a trainer for practice at the comfort of her house. The amazing thing was, she had a loft room with full length mirrors installed on one wall, a makeshift workout bench, free weights, yoga mats, TRX suspension trainer, a pink exercise ball, and a foam roller. God knew what other magical equipment she had kept out of sight! This was such a good environment for fitness training.

I was awfully inspired to get an apartment of my own just so I could have a room like hers!

We began to train weekly and ended each session with a healthy dinner at her place. This capable woman had just so many recipes hidden up her sleeves to help us eat clean! Her dishes were usually only baked, boiled or sometimes pan fried with olive oil. Anyone can workout for an hour but controlling what goes on your plate for the next 23 hours is total hard work.

Elyn’s love for fitness keeps me going. If I ever feel defeated in any way, I know I only need to look at her to remind myself that I can push on.

If you are someone who lacks the discipline to work out alone, join your friends when they have activities. Go for classes together. It is always easier to progress together with a close-knit community because a little friendly competition helps along the way. A true companion is one that brings out the best in you!
